Greece - International Organization for Migration reports an estimated 181,476 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea in 2016, arriving in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain, through April 13. Latest fatalities stand at 1,232.
IOM on Tuesday morning learned of reports of corpses being retrieved off the coast of Libya near Garabulli, although it is not known whether these may be victims of last week’s shipwreck or from a different incident.
IOM estimates that some 25,894 migrants arrived in Italy by sea between 1 January and 25 April 2016. For the month of April through Monday (25/4), Italian authorities report a total of 7,499 arrivals. Another 1,130 migrants have been rescued on the high seas since then. According to the Italian Ministry of Interior, 26,228 migrants arrived in Italy between 1 January and 30 April 2015.
Greece, by contrast, has experienced a sharp decline in the number of arrivals this month. For the year through April 25, IOM Athens reports the arrival of an estimated 154,491 migrants and refugees. Over the weekend – 22 April through 24 April – a total of just 223 migrants reportedly arrived on the Greek Islands.
