The Italian Coast Guard confirmed the rescue of 1,482 people off the Libyan coast in the past two days, a new indication that the number of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Italy is on the rise. According to Italian government data, almost 14,500 people have arrived in Italy from Libya so far this year. In March, the number of arrivals has more than doubled in comparison to the same period last year.
The Hellenic Coast Guard reported a significant increase in the number of unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) arriving in Greece within the first quarter of 2016. This trend was observed in particular on Lesvos, where some 537 UASC younger unaccompanied children arrived in the first three months of the year, compared to 750 in the whole of 2015.
